Nursing and holistic healing modalities are both about caring, compassion and healing. Many years ago Florence Nightingale described the role of the nurse, “When the individual is connected with the sacred within and placed in the best condition for nature to act, the person is guided to “wholeness” through their own inner healer.” Bonnie believes in caring for the “whole” person. She believes that healing is a process of integrating and balancing the body, mind and spirit.

Holistic Nurses embrace the enhancement of healing the whole person, from birth to death as its goal. Holism involves identifying the interrelationship of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions of the person, recognizing that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. It involves understanding the individual as a “unitary” whole in mutual process with the environment. The holistic nurse is an instrument of healing and a facilitator in the healing process. Holistic nurses honor the individual’s subjective experience about health, health beliefs and values.
(B. Dossey, 2005)
Holistic nursing requires the nurse to integrate self-care and self-responsibility into their daily life and clinical practice and to strive for an awareness of the interconnectedness of individuals to the human and global community. A Holistic nurse creates a healing space within herself that allows her to be an instrument of healing for the purpose of helping another feel safe and more in harmony; one who shares authenticity of unconditioned presence that helps to remove the barriers to the healing process, (B. Dossey, 2005). Holistic nursing involves “being” a healing presence for others as well as ourselves

“When people have a ceremony done for them, it relaxes their body; it relaxes their mind; it – you might say – takes them into another world for a while and if they give their full attention, they can be healed”.
Navajo Chanter
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words - Rei and Ki. The word “Rei” means universal or spiritual consciousness. The work “Ki” means life energy. The word “Ki” has the same meaning as prana in Sanskrit and Chi in Chinese. Placed together, the word Reiki means spiritually guided life force energy. This life energy is also known as the vital life force or the universal life force. This chi or life energy is the same flow of invisible and unnoticed energy that gently travels through the earth and sky, floats on waters and is carried by gentle breezes, bringing happiness and prosperity wherever it circulates.
Reiki is an ancient and sacred Tibetan method of using gentle and loving universal energy to bring balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit. It is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing as well as the art of being “present in the moment."
Reiki was rediscovered in the late 1800’s in Japan by a man named Dr. Mikao Usui. As taught by Dr Usui, Reiki encompasses a set of “Reiki Ideals” as a guide for living. Reiki was later brought to the west by Reiki Master Hawayo Takata.
Reiki balances and harmonizes the body, mind and spirit and reveals the body’s innate intelligence to heal itself. It promotes relaxation, decreases stress and strengthens the body’s immune system. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other holistic and allopathic modalities. It is performed by the gentle laying on of hands through which universal energy is channeled to areas of the body or energy field where imbalances exist. Reiki can be learned by anyone. It is now being used in many hospitals, homes and businesses around the country.
The Reiki workshops offered are a combination of lecture, discussion, and hands on practice. The student is expected to practice for several weeks after the class to gain experience and confidence in utilizing the Reiki training. There are several levels offered. The First Degree teaches treatment for self and others. The Second degree teaches more in depth hands on treatments and distance healing. Advanced Reiki Training is for those who would like to increase their energy and training but who do not intend to teach Reiki. The Master Level training is for those who would like to teach Reiki. The Reiki workshops can facilitate personal development and can be used with family and friends.

Healing Touch is a multi-level nursing based program that is complementary to health care. It was started by Janet Mentgen, RN, BSN, HNC, in 1989. It is used extensively in the nursing profession. It is endorsed by the Holistic Nurses’ Association.
Healing Touch is a gentle bio-field therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing. It is a complementary technique that restores and balances the human energy system, promoting a decrease in pain and anxiety. The hands and a light touch are used to balance, energize and clear the human electromagnetic field assisting self healing to take place. The non-invasive techniques used promote physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Healing Touch can be used alone or in conjunction with other holistic therapies (such as Reiki) and allopathic modalities. It is being used in hospitals, homes and businesses throughout the country.
In some studies Healing Touch has been shown to decrease symptoms, increase relaxation, increase relief of pain, provide spiritual benefit, increase calmness and improve breathing.

Guided Imagery is a form of relaxation that utilizes visualization to guide and focus the mind into a place where the person feels safe and peaceful. This technique helps to reduce anxiety and pain and enhances relaxation and promotes healing. Guided imagery can be used alone or with Reiki and Healing Touch to help in challenging situations such as medical procedures and surgery. It can also help to facilitate health and wellness goals.
Positive affirmations are often used alone or with guided imagery. Positive affirmations help to change our inner programming. Through the repetition of positive affirmations, destructive inner tapes of negativity are re-programmed with new messages of security and self worth.
